As an Axe-FX II user who is currently experimenting with third party IR’s (Impulse Responses) from the likes of Ownhammer and Redwirez, the choices that these IR’s bring in terms of mic selection and mic placement can be overwhelming.

Anyway, I stumbled on this video, which gives a clear demonstration of the tonal effects of different mic placement on a guitar speaker and how to mix different mic positions to give a tonally rich and satisfying end result. I found this video really helped me to understand what to expect from the various mic placement options when mixing my own IR recipes using Redwirez and Fractal’s Cab-Lab utility. Cool stuff!

PS: I should add that I’m talking about IR’s which are supplied with a number of different mic type and placement variants, such as those from Redwirez.
